how to monetize a website

Did you start your blog or website with the idea that it’d be easy money? If you’re reading this article, that means you found out it’s not.

There’s no such thing as easy money right off the bat. Everything takes work and you might feel like you don’t know where to start. There are more than 400 million blogs out there, so you’ve got steep competition on top of all that.

If you need to know how to monetize a website, the answer is hard work and one of the strategies (or all!) below.

Get started now.

1. Sell Courses

Everyone wants to feel like they have their life together. They’ll pay money to grasp a chance of learning how to get there too.

That’s how so many people are making money off selling courses on their websites. Personal life coaches sell series of videos for hundreds of dollars. Videos of them talking about their strategy for life.

Even if you don’t feel like you have life figured out, there’s something you know how to do that someone else wants to learn. Did you get a really high score on an entrance exam? You can sell the story and then your guide to how to do that.

Tell the world what you did, then encourage them to do the same thing. This is an easy way to make hundreds of dollars from one client and get them in your email marketing funnel.

There are even video courses on how to make a video course, so buy or try to find one for free.

To market your video course, offer an introduction or a section of it for free and use that to lure people in.

Write guest posts on other people’s sites, offer them for free to the publisher. Then ask if you can link to your course for free and content-related publicity.

If you don’t want to go through the hassle of a creating a course, structure a live video call to do the same thing. You can sell tickets to the show like you would for a public speaking engagement.

2. Private Consulting

If you don’t want to start a video course, you can offer one on one coaching for about any niche. What was that thing you thought of when we asked what unique thing you know how to do?

How can you market that to business owners or even students? Some people charge up to $1000 for a one-hour phone call.

Start off giving people some free advice in exchange for them writing a testimonial. Then start off around $50 an hour an increase as there’s more demand.

Research other coaches in your area to find out an established going rate.

Before you go on your first coaching call, ask the person what their biggest concern is for their business. If a fairy could give them the answer to three business-related questions, what would they ask?

Then put yourself in those situations. Have you been there skill-wise or with your business? What did or would you do?

This is about all the prep you need to do for the call, other than learning about their business.

You can use the guest post publicity strategy for this too. See if you can write some generic advice articles for large companies or publications in your niche.

Then lead those interested clients to your coaching page.

3. In Text Ads

There’s a new way of having ads on your page that doesn’t involve annoying side banners or pop-ups. For one, side banners and ad sidebars are almost obsolete, efficiency wise.

In text, ads are the next ad side banners and they’re a less obvious form of advertising. Instead of displaying copy and images on your blog, certain words you naturally wrote link to relevant sites.

So if you wrote “I’m working on increasing my business presence online” the program could link the words “business presence online” to a site like ours.

People are smart and they understand what hyperlinks do. On desktop and some mobile devices, you can hover over the linked text before you decide to click on it.

You get paid per click or per following transaction, depending on the company.

They’re not flashy, non-intrusive, and don’t slow down your page load time. What’s not to love about in-text ads?

4. Offer a Digital Download

Would you rather write than talk? You can do that too. A document you spend one-day writing and editing can bring you consistent income.

People use digital downloads to monetize their websites and get traffic. Are you an artist? You can offer art template downloads for a small or large fee.

Maybe you know a good strategy for learning a certain type of code. Sit down and write that strategy out like you were explaining it to an alien who knew nothing about it.

Voila, now you can charge for a beginners guide to learning whatever language you choose.

Many people entice their customers to join their email lists by offering a free chapter or snippet of their web download. They give you their information and you email them a shortened pdf of your download.

Put a call to action in your email with the link to the real thing and maybe a small percentage off. People love feeling like they’re getting a deal.

That way people can sample before they buy and you get them on your list for email marketing.
